Violence against women is an international problem - it persists in different forms in all countries and societies of the world. It is currently estimated that over one third of all women worldwide have been subjected to physical or sexual violence. Global statistics indicate that the majority of conflict - related sexual violence is committed by men against women. Sexual violence is by no means a war phenomenon only; it often continues even when armed hostilities have ceased - perpetrators being family members, neighbours, and figures of authority such as teachers, security personnel or gangs. Thus, gender-based violence during and after the conflict, in the public area and in the private ‘arena’ of the home form a continuum.
